This is my favorite sushi experience I’ve ever had. We did omakase here for our anniversary and look back on it fondly often because we were blown away by the food and service. We left completely stuffed. Each dish was beautiful, incredibly fresh and so complex and unique. I can’t say enough good things except best sushi in Chicago.

Have to rave about this place! It is so hard to find fresh, good sushi anywhere that the drive from the suburbs was worth it. This place came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. It's small, so reservations need to be made. They do stick to the times pretty strictly, so give yourself enough time to park. If you're wanting a full experience definitely opt for the Omakase. It's worth it! You get a little bit of everything. The flavors, texture and presentation are above par here and will definitely be coming back to enjoy more items from the menu.

Beautiful presentation of delectable bites. We celebrated with the Omakase. Prefer tuna over salmon but had the butteriest salmon ever here. Didn't have to supplement our order with other sushi as all were included in the Omakase of the day.

Absolutely the best Omakase experience in Chicago. We tried the Chef's tasting menu and paired it with a bottle of sake with suggestion from the server. Each dish was amazing and the food was plentiful. They also accomodated us last minute …

Very fun flavors and chefs were dope! This is my favorite progressive omakase spot in Chicago. I've dined at KAI ZAN twice thus far and will keep coming back for special occasions.

A small and cozy place to have a date with amazing food. The dessert blew my mind. We also had sake and I loved the creamy Char Siu. The waiter also answered all our questions about food and was super nice.

We love to check out omakase spots especially in the Chicagoland area so of course Kai Zan was on our list! We tried their 10 course Chef's Choice omakase (note: menu varies). Pictured are a few of our favorite/the most interesting bites! Our Menu: Madai Carpaccio: Japanese red snapper, basil, toro, black tobiko, olive oil Escolar & Maguro Pearls: seared tuna and escolar, sushi rice, spicy aioli, truffle oil, scallions Angry Crab: spicy crab wrapped in tuna, tempura crunch, spicy aioli Shooters: oysters and scallops, ponzu sauce, quail egg, scallions, tabasco, black tobiko Orange Rush: lightly seared scallops, seared salmon, citrus glaze Baby Octopus: jicama, mango, ginger, seaweed Main: shrimp, char siu, tako yaki, tako wasabi Nigiri (Chef's choice) Dynamite Mussels: New Zealand mussels, masago, black tobiko, scallion aioli Sashimi (assorted fish) Everyone was so friendly! Each course was explained to us prior to consumption. Most of our omakase experiences have been super intimate with less than 14 people so this was definitely a different vibe but do note that Kai Zan offers more than omakase. We had an AMAZING beef-related appetizer (not pictured) and dessert (highlighted first ) so we look forward to trying more of their regular menu items next time!

We sat at the counter looking into the kitchen which has its perks. Food was delicious and service impeccable. The attention to detail in every dish is amazing including the mochi which seemed molded to an actual fruit shaped casing!

Ahh where do I even start. When we moved to the city from California, Kai Zan was always on my list but being in West Town, I always put it off. I wish I didn't because oh my goodness, we were blown away by every bite. The restaurant itself is good for a date night or a night with the girls. There are little booths for smaller tables and bigger booths as well. Very intimate and cute. For starters, we shared the polenta bites, orange crush, and dynamite mussels. Now I'm not exaggerating when I say this but the polenta bite is the best bite we have had in the city. It was creamy, full of flavor, fresh, and the play on texture with the krispy kale was unbeatable. I could eat 20 of these. The presentation of the orange crush was beautiful. The scallop was seared and wrapped with escolar. I loved the smokey taste from the scallop but felt the escolar was may be cut too thick but I'm not complaining! Amazing bite as well. The flavor of the polenta bites and orange crush was a good setting scene for the rest of our dishes. Though the dynamite mussels are nothing special, I was craving mussels but this one dish fell short for us. The sauce was super creamy and delicious but the mussels were super chewy. Not sure if this is from being overcooked but that really made the dish not enjoyable. For our mains, we shared the spicy toro maki and the flaming tuna. The spicy toro maki was one of the best rolls I have ever had. The toro was so fresh and the flavor was so unique and creamy. I'm not a huge fan of shrimp tempura but it was curated well in the flaming tuna roll. I was pretty full by this point but the roll was delicious. To end the amazing meal off, we ordered the black sesame ice cream lava cake. Compliments to the chef and team because wow. Literally drooling over everything while writing this!
